What is your name and role at Mississippi State University? How are you affiliated with GCAHFS?
I am Adithya Bindhu Sreekumar, a Research Associate II at the Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Lab under the Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security (GCAHFS) and the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine. As a research associate at the Gulf Coast Aquatic Health Lab, I am assisting in establishing a new lab dedicated to marine animal health research and characterization of marine isolates and pathogenesis. By developing a core genomics lab with capabilities in molecular diagnostics, microbial genome sequencing, and high-performance computing, we will be able to conduct research focused on investigating the interrelationship among microorganisms and marine animals.
What is the most rewarding part of being affiliated with GCAHFS?
The most rewarding part of being affiliated with GCAHFS is the opportunity to be part of a vibrant and collaborative research environment while expanding my professional network. Through GCAHFS, I have been able to connect with experts from various fields, gain exposure to different research perspectives, and strengthen my academic and professional development. Coming from a different country, GCAHFS has also provided me with a valuable personal experience, allowing me to learn about a new culture, meet people from varied backgrounds, and adapt to a dynamic research environment. Being part of such a supportive and engaged team has made the experience both professionally enriching and personally rewarding.
How has GCAHFS advanced your career or schooling?
My long-term research goals and interests are strongly in line with GCAHFS’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling the rising demands of aquaculture producers, wildlife managers, and policymakers for advancing the sustainability of the coastal economy and welfare. This integrated approach to research and outreach was a key reason that initially drew me into GCAHFS and continues to influence and shape my academic goals. Additionally, the collaborative culture within the GCAHFS, where teamwork and mutual support are highly valued, creates a motivating environment that enhances both scientific impact and personal development.
What are three fun facts about you?
- A good, long sleep is my ultimate reset button, it instantly calms my nerves and significantly reduces my mental stress. If I’m well-rested, I can handle almost anything.
- Despite working on research related to aquaculture and fisheries, I don’t eat freshwater fish or seafood at all, except shrimp. This always surprises people and makes for a fun conversation starter once they find out what my research interests are.
- When I’m stressed, my brain sometimes forgets simple words, which become especially noticeable at restaurants. If a waiter suddenly asks me to order, I often go completely silent for a few seconds, like my system is rebooting!
