Meet GCAHFS-Affiliated Faculty: Dr. Caroline Betbeze-Ivy

Headshot of Dr. Betbeze-Ivy on maroon background. Text reads: "MEET THE GCAHFS TEAM. I think the most rewarding part of being affiliated with GCAHFS is getting to meet new people that are very interested in aquatic health. It’s also very exciting to see these critically endangered animals be able to be released back into the wild after the great medical care that they receive. DR. CAROLINE BETBEZE-IVY. CLINICAL PROFESSOR."

What is your role at Mississippi State University and how are you affiliated with GCAHFS?

I am a veterinary ophthalmologist and a clinical professor at the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine. For the Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security, my primary role is that I consult on any sea turtles or dolphins that have ocular disease, which is relatively common. When these animals strand, they can pretty easily get ocular injuries, corneal ulcers, etc., so I consult about that. I also am a member of the Sea Turtle Health Steering Committee, where we help to evaluate the medical records of the sea turtles that are under human care and determine when it's appropriate for us to consider releasing them back into the wild. It is a very rewarding experience.

How has GCAHFS advanced your career or schooling?

GCAHFS has really helped me in my career. I have been able to learn so much about sea turtles and dolphins and their ocular health, and I have been able to teach in a class that is centered around care for marine animals. I've also learned so much about the anatomy of their eyes and the diseases that they get. It has been really helpful as well because I've been able to participate in some research and been on some research studies regarding these animals and their health.

What are three fun facts about you?

  1. I am a scuba diver, and I am also a certified rescue diver, so I feel very comfortable diving. I have been all over the world to some really beautiful locations.
  2. I recently took up beekeeping and have really enjoyed learning about the bees and harvesting all the delicious honey that they produce!
  3. I really enjoy trying out new restaurants with friends and family and getting to try new foods that I've never tried before.
