What is your role at Mississippi State University and how are you affiliated with GCAHFS?
I’m a Research Professor at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. I’m based at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, where my work focuses on applied fish health management. I’m affiliated with the Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security through my work with the FAO Reference Center and its Technical Working Group. In that role, I bring an extensive background in aquatic animal health and practical disease management strategies relevant to aquaculture. The connection between MSU, GCAHFS, and FAO means our applied research at NWAC not only helps domestic producers but can also inform domestic and international policy.
What is the most rewarding part of being affiliated with GCAHFS?
It’s rewarding to be part of a team that turns science into real-world impact, particularly in the areas of food security, agricultural sustainability, and workforce development. MSU is doing big things in Mississippi and the world stage. It’s exciting to be a part of it.
How has GCAHFS advanced your career or schooling?
GCAHFS has opened doors for international collaboration, interdisciplinary projects, and leadership opportunities that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. It has allowed me to see our research impact from a much broader perspective.
What are some fun facts about you?
- I enjoy coaching my son and his friends in football, basketball, and baseball. It’s too bad I’m not very good at it.
- My wife and I love to travel and take our son to new places. We’ve learned you can see a lot of cool things if you are willing to drive.
- I enjoy meeting new people. One of the most rewarding things about my job, particularly my role with GCAHFS, is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. It gives me a perspective that I wouldn’t have otherwise.
